Leading by Example

Fireside began doing business in 1982 with just a handful of employees led by then CEO Tom Karwin. Tom was a hands-on man: driving a forklift, answering the phone, putting in long hours – going the extra mile. His enthusiasm and work ethic spread to his growing number of employees. Four of the original five employees still work at Fireside and employee turnover over the years has been extremely low. Fireside is a “family” business without the common gene pool! From the original focus as a distributor to home building contractors to a now growing retail business, Fireside strives to keep their customers happy.

Innovation Grows the Company

Known and respected throughout the hearth-product industry by manufacturers and dealers alike, Karwin was a pioneer in keeping his clients satisfied. Fireside’s 1993 Start Up program was an innovative effort to give builders the assurance of a job done right. Under Start Up, Fireside installed a fireplace during the rough-in process and then came back right before owner occupancy to test and adjust all Fireside products. Still performed today, this program strengthens builder relationships and customer satisfaction. In fact, the entire industry now practices similar programs to ensure quality workmanship. Many manufacturers also turned to Karwin when testing new products and concepts, relying on his knowledge from years in the trade for quality feedback.
